WHO Sounds Concern Over Severe Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of people that would benefit from weight-loss injections including Wegovy can access them, caution the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the drugs.

Considering over a billion people worldwide now classified as obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

Per forecasts, more than two billion could be obese by 2030 if no action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and continuous support," remarked its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key barriers to widespread availability to the jabs that can help people shift substantial weight, says the agency.

Even in the current most optimistic case, the manufacturing of these medications might only reach about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, according to the health organization.

The advice urges countries and companies to widen availability, via measures such as patent sharing.

A patent on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is set to lapse in a number of nations in 2026.
